The Canyon area test stands were constructed in the mid-to-late 1950s as a site for LOX/RP engine testing supporting the Redstone, Thor, and H-1 engine programs. Three test stands were erected in this area. Originally, the area was known as the “TRE” Area, an acronym for “Transition Reliability Equipment”

U.S. satellite, Explorer I aboard a Jupiter-C launch
